Book Of John - Chapter 2 - Bible Study

DAY 2 - Chapter 2

Highlights/Understanding
Chapter 2 – NASB Translation
FIRST Miracle
1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there

Wedding Host is a Supporter of the Ministry/Believer
2 and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding

Mary to bear witness as she is waiting for the prophecy to unravel in Jesus’s life
1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there
2 and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding
3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, "They have no wine."
4 And Jesus said to her, "Womanwhat does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come."

Mary knows that with Jesus’s ministry, if Disciples follow HIS instructions, they can witness the miracle
5 His mother said to the servants"Whatever * * He says to you, do it."

Fill your Hollow containers with living water Jesus like HE instructs to witness the miracle.
6 Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purificationcontaining twenty or thirty gallons each
7 Jesus said to them, "Fill the waterpots with water." So they filled them up to the brim
8 And He said to them, "Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter." So they took it to him.
9 When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew ), the headwaiter called the bridegroom

Christian life in others’ eye is a Miracle. It is a life of blessing and miracle until the very end.

9 When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew ), the headwaiter called the bridegroom
10 and said to him, "Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now."

First Miracle. Why wedding? Is it becos the GOD sees his Church as HIS Bride
11 This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.

House of Prayer and Praises not a place of business. Beware of this my friends.
13 The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem
14 And He found in the temple those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables.
15 And He made a scourge of cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables
16 and to those who were selling the doves He said"Take these things awaystop making My Father's house a place of business."

Passover and Golden Calf – From Moses’s time, people are wayward about their ways. Inspite of watching the miracles, they needed a golden calf to celebrate. Though Passover is about victory over their bondage, they have found ways to get back to their sinful life even after many many years.
This where Jesus comes with grace.

Every aspect of Jesus’s life is a continuous reminder of the Prophesy - Psalm 69:9
17 His disciples remembered that it was written, "ZEAL FOR YOUR HOUSE WILL CONSUME ME."

Jews believed in Signs
18 The Jews then said to Him, "What sign do You show us as your authority for doing these things?"

Hard for the Jews to accept that Jesus (as per them a common man) questions their practice even though they know Jesus is right.
18 The Jews then said to Him, "What sign do You show us as your authority for doing these things?"

Jesus self-prophecy - Realization of John and disciples
19 Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up."
20 The Jews then said, "It took forty-six * * years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?"
21 But He was speaking of the temple of His body
22 So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken

Book Of John - Bible Study Chapter 1 - Part B

Chapter 1: 19 - 51

JOHN The Baptist
19 Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.
20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”
21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.”
22 Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’ ”
24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent
25 questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
26 “I baptize with water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know.
27 He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”
28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

John’s Testimony about Jesus.

(John is Jesus’s Cousin. But John did not know until Jesus started his work. Holy Spirit in HIM identified Jesus Christ. Not everyone (High priests/Pharisees) did.)

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
30 This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’
31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”
32 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.
33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”

Transfer of Ministry
35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.
36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”
37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.
38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”
39 “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.”So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.
40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.
41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).
42 And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter ).

MESSIAH
40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.
41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).

SIMON TO PETER
42 And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter ).

DISCIPLESHIP

Andrew
Peter
Philip
Nathanael

43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.”
44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.
45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

MOSES’s Prophecy
45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

NAZARETH – Not a popular town

46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip.

NATHANAEL – Skeptical

46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip.

JESUS’s view on NATHANAEL
47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.”

NATHANAEL & JESUS
(There must be something that was in Nathanael’s heart that Jesus/GOD alone can see)
48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”

WITNESS MIRACLES – Becos of Belief
50 Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.”

SPIRITUAL REALM visible to eyes becos of belief

51 He then added, “Very truly I tell you, you will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’the Son of Man.”

 *Disciple Nathaniel
Book of John is the only book where the disciple *Nathaniel* has a reference. However, it was widely believed by the biblical scholars that Nathaniel is otherwise referred to as Bartholomew who worked together with Philip. Bartholomew is another apostle (other Apostle is Thomas) who visited India in 2nd century. His missionary works were mainly around the  urrent Mumbai & Konkan coastal regions.

Book Of John - Bible Study Chapter 1 - Part A

Chapter 1: 1 - 18

WORD is FIRST
WORD is GOD
WORD is JESUS
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was with God in the beginning.
3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.
10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.
14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

LIGHT is JESUS
5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John.
7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.
8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.
ACCEPTING Christ – Not easy for the world
10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.
11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.
12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—
CHILDREN of GOD By Belief
12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—
13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

PROPHECY by John the Baptist
15 (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ ”)

GRACE received from Jesus Christ (Not Law received)
16 Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.
17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

REVELATION - Opportunity for mankind to see GOD in flesh - JESUS
18 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.
